It's that time of year when we all ponder what the perfect gift is for the people we love. If you have a knitter, crocheter, or yarn lover in your life, let me help you out a bit.
You see, you may think buying them yarn is a great idea. Heed my warning; don't do it! Yarnies all approach yarn buying with different thoughts and plans and unless you are a mindreader the odds of you hitting on the exactly perfect yarn purchase are pretty miniscule. If you know a brand of yarn they love, OR an independent dyer they buy from often, they'll likely help you out by giving you some weight and color guidance based on past purchases...but tread very, very carefully, my friends!
So what do you buy them? I've got suggestions for you of some of my favorite yarn-related products that make for excellent and thoughtful gifting. You ready? Here we go...

Yes, these are a new Doolittle Yarnery product, but my feedback group of yarnies were THRILLED to see these come to life. These are not your ordinary bag tags. They allow you to catalog what is in your project bag so it's easy to find those needles or that project you can't remember where you stashed. And if you purchase the set, they'll come with numbers one through six on the back of each tag along with a die to help you decide what project to work on next and it's all put together in a decorative storage bag! Give these as a single tag for a stocking stuffer, or a set of six for a lovely gift.
Project and Tote Bags
I love project bags and most yarnies feel they can never have enough. The come in a great variety of styles, sizes, themes, and colors. Below are some of the bag makers and bags that I really can't live without.
-
-
The Julie Bag from The Wandering Purl - This is a taller zip top bag and you can create your own from the array of fabrics that are offered. This a go to bag for me and if one of these arrived under my Christmas tree, I'd be delighted!
- The Divided Sock Bag by My Needle Crafts - If you or your yarnie make socks this is a treat of a bag. With two side by side sections divided by a zipper pocket, it allows you to have 2 balls of yarn for your two socks wrangled separately as you knit or crochet. It also includes a snap yarn feeder on each side to help keep things from tangling up.
- Extra Large Leather Convertible Backpack by OkraShop - I own TWO of these bags. I use them for travel for work and find I can store my laptop, extra screen, iPad, wallet, tech pouch AND at least 2 small knitting projects easily. I prefer having the suitcase sleeve and a pocket on the back and I usetheir felt insert for organizing. This would also make a fantastic Fiber Fest bag for carrying your wips and stashing your purchases!
- Any bag from Joji and Co - Ask any knitter and they'll tell you they covet almost every bag Joji Locatelli drops. Her inventory comes in batch drops, so stalking her website for the perfect bag is a great idea. The colors and styles each drop vary, but nary a release goes by where I am not drooling over at least one bag!
- What Up, My Sheeple! Drawstring Bag from Doolittle Yarnery - You had to know I'd include at least ONE Doolittle bag in this list and if you were only going to buy one, the drawstring is the most versatile.

Fix it Tools
We are great at our craft but even expert level yarnies make mistakes. Here are some great options for fix it tools which are never around when we need them so we can always use more!

-
- Coco Knits Stitch Fixer - This one is my personal favorite because of the crochet hook on EACH end!
- Susan Bates Silvalume Handi Tool - With a crochet hook on one end and a pointed other end, this has many possible uses from fixing a dropped stitch to replacing a cable needle.
- Duo Wooden Repair Hooks from Twice Sheared Sheep - With 3 sizes of hooks you can repair any gauge of knitting without worry. These will fit inside the Altoids size notion tins for easy keeping and taking.
Tiny Scissors
We lose them. We stash them in a project bag. We set them down and forget where. We always need more!
-
- These tiny and inexpensive scissors with a cover - Look, there are a TON of cute tiny scissors on the market and with a quick google search you can find all sorts of colors, materials, and designs. But for the price and considering they're basically a consumable to us, these are always a sure bet.
Other Fun Gifts
The list is long, but there are tons of useful tools out there depending upon what your recipient has already and likes to use. Here are several of my must-haves:
-
- Needle Binder from Thread & Maple- This is an investment, but so are your needles, hooks, etc. these leather binders corral and hold all of your tools. I have two (yes, yes, I have too many needles and I know it), but I love knowing they all have a beautiful, safe, and organized home. With the ability to pop out a single page, make it its own binder and take it on the go is a fantastic bonus!
- A Subscription to KnitCompanion - This app is a complete game changer for knitters, crocheters, cross-stitches, etc. It has a bit of a learning curve to it, but there are great tutorial videos. It's available in both iOS and Android, so everyone can use it.
- A piece from Birdie Parker Designs - You can't go wrong with any of these lovely jewelry pieces, but I am partial to the pendants and cuff bracelets. I wear my KNIT necklace every day!
- A GiftCard to their local yarn store is the gift that fits everyone!
- A sock sizing ruler - For the sock knitter who likes when the socks fit!
- Mini Minder Bundle from Lemonwood - This bundle has the Mini Minder to help you keep your yarn in check on the go, the Whirl base for when you are stationary, and an extra long stick to accommodate even the largest of skeins!
- A T-shirt from Doolittle Yarnery - We've just added new designs, and have a little something for everyone, so pick your favorite design, shirt color, and size and stuff that stocking!
- Stitch Stoppers - From Doolittle Yarnery or Comma Craft Co. - another item that we lose and misplace and can never have enough of. They showcase the season, our mood, and our personality. A very fun stocking stuffer!

And never forget that the best gift you can give a yarnie is time to sit and knit, crochet, spin, and craft!
Happy Holidays!
